Embracing family life in Chiang Mai
At Globestone Developments, we appreciate that families view life through diverse lenses. In today’s fast-paced world, the significance of family life is more apparent than ever. Many families cherish the simplicity of life—whether it’s a breath of fresh air, a moment of inner peace, or the joy of smiles from children and loved ones. These experiences inspire us to create homes tailored for families.
Recently, we had the pleasure of interviewing a wonderful couple, Lilian and Alex, who reside in Chiang Mai with their two young children, attending an international school. Alex, originally from East Germany, has worked in major metropolitan cities around the world, including Tokyo, London, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Bangkok, and the UAE, specialising in events and conference management. Meanwhile, Lilian hails from Macau and is a talented Latin dancer and teacher, having spent time in Hong Kong.
We were eager to learn how this couple, with their extensive exposure to international cities, chose Chiang Mai as the place to raise their children, often hosting family visits from their in-laws. What draws them to Chiang Mai? How does the living environment support their family life? Are they happy? Their story offers a unique perspective on family life in this vibrant city.
Lilian and Alex’s insights on what Chiang Mai can offer for family life are truly inspiring. Below, we summarise key elements for those considering a move to this charming city.
Living in Chiang Mai
Alex shares his thoughts: “I’ve lived in cities like Singapore, Tokyo, London, and Hong Kong. I’m done with the big cities and the pressure of the corporate world. Chiang Mai is very different from these cities. If you’re accustomed to everything being super clean and perfectly organised, this may not be the place for you. But I appreciate the laid-back lifestyle here. I don’t mind a few imperfections as long as the basics of living are provided.”
He continues, “I’m very comfortable and happy with how the city has treated us so far. I like this slow life. You can get things done here, but you have to embrace the natural vibe of Chiang Mai. It’s a positive experience.”
A nurturing environment for children
Alex reflects on his previous life in Macau, filled with glitter and glamour: “My kids grew up in an environment where nothing was too expensive, and they were surrounded by luxury. This is not the upbringing I want for them. I want my kids to appreciate the simplicity of life.”
He explains, “Chiang Mai allows for a more natural upbringing. Here, children can engage in various activities—like learning Chinese, maths, English, piano, and sports—while also benefiting from the natural environment. The education system emphasises practical life skills. My daughter even buys sticky rice from local vendors, learning about the hard work that goes into it.”
Lilian adds, “In Macau, kids mostly play in indoor spaces, but here, around 80% of restaurants have dedicated play areas for children. These spaces are thoughtfully designed, allowing kids to move freely and enjoy their surroundings.”
Choosing where to live in Chiang Mai
When it comes to selecting a home, Alex advises, “Consider what’s important for you. For us, being close to our children’s school was a priority. We don’t need the downtown nightlife or the convenience of city living. We’re comfortable with driving to the supermarket, even if it’s a change from our previous lives in Hong Kong and Macau.”
Family-friendly properties
Lilian and Alex made two promises to their children before moving: they wanted a house with a pool and a German Shepherd. “After living in crowded cities, we wanted more personal space. A pool isn’t a necessity for me, but it’s great for socialising and playtime,” Alex explains.
He adds, “I’m a big fan of greenery. Growing up in a garden, I wanted a home where our dogs could enjoy the outdoors too. I also appreciate having my own space—a 'man cave' with my TV, free from distractions.”
Final words of wisdom
“Chiang Mai is a creative, relaxed city with many emerging businesses and a happy atmosphere,” Alex concludes. “Embrace the culture, respect the locals, and enjoy the beautiful nature, excellent education, and incredible cuisine. Chiang Mai has so much to offer. Open yourself to it, become part of the city, and be creative.”
For families considering a move to Chiang Mai, Lilian and Alex’s story illustrates the beauty of embracing a simpler, more meaningful life in this vibrant community. Whether you’re drawn by the natural surroundings, the educational opportunities, or the welcoming atmosphere, Chiang Mai could be the perfect place to call home.
